What do you want in life? Do you have a dream home, dream job, or maybe a dream partner?
Whatever it is, getting what you want will be far easier when you have defined what it is you really desire and set goals to get you there. But your goals must be framed in a way that will make them meaningful.
Loosely worded goals or those that are too general will never work so make sure they are smart. But what does "Smart" actually mean?
S - is for Specific
If, for instance, you have a goal related to weight loss then saying simply "I want to lose weight" or "I want to lose "x" pounds" is not specific enough. Instead you should state exactly what weight you want to be and by what date.
M - is for Measurable
With the weight loss example above measuring your progress is simple but what if you have goals about your career or job? Well you must have a way of measuring your progress towards your objective. That could be the number of job interviews you've attended, courses you've been on, or steps you have taken in setting up a business. Only you can know what you're aiming for but if you have ways of measuring you will be sure to get there so much quicker.
A - is for Achievable
Having goals that challenge you will make them more worthwhile but you must be sure they are achievable. For Usain Bolt running the 100m in 9.00 seconds is achievable - is it for you? Probably not!
R - is for Realistic
Let's go back to that weight loss goal. We've already decided you need to know what your target weight is and when you want to get to it. Getting to that weight is certainly achievable but is the time frame you've set realistic? In order to reach the desired weight you will have to make changes. You will need to change what you eat and drink and you will have to change your exercise regime. Those, too, will be achievable but are they things that you can and are willing to do? Maybe it will need longer to achieve. It is far better to set a time-frame you can work with as any goal that is not realistic will soon become a chore and will never be reached.
T - is for Time-Constrained
As already mentioned above, for your goals to be effective they must be set within a specific time-frame. Your big goals are probably about the dream home, the dream job, or that fantastic sports car. But they will remain dreams unless you have a plan for how you're going to get them and a deadline for doing so. So make sure your goals are time-constrained.
So take a look at your aims and make sure they are based upon Smart goals. That way their chances of becoming reality will be much stronger.
